CrossFit Conditioning: An Overview

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that trains the entire body as a single unit. Everyone who subscribes to CrossFit conditioning program is considered an athlete and treated like one. The official CrossFit website posts “Workout Of The Day” (WOD) everyday which are scaled to meet general fitness level and experience of the followers of the program. WODs target several different types of disciplines such as weightlifting, gymnastics, sprinting, rowing, jumping, kettle bells etc.

The CrossFit conditioning program brings together explosive polymetrics, Olympic and power-style weight lifting, strength training, body weight exercises and endurance exercises to give you a booty that is even better than the brazil butt lift workout if you are woman, and a ripped body if you are a man. By combining these training regimens, CrossFit targets the most vital elements of overall fitness of the body i.e. the cardio-respiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, stamina, power, agility, speed, coordination and accuracy.

CrossFit requires you to train for at least 3 to 5 days a week. The workouts are short in duration but very high in intensity. They last for about 5-15 minutes. They are basically explosive exercises carried out in the form of a circuit where one exercise follows the next with little or no rest in between.

Key exercises included in the CrossFit conditioning program include pulling, pushing, rowing, running and squatting. Here are few examples of CrossFit exercises:

1. Power Cleans:

This involves lifting a weighted bar up to and in front of your shoulders in a forceful and swift manner.

2. Burpees:

This exercise involves body weight only and it begins from standing position. From the standing position you have to quickly drop to the floor, do a push up, come to squatting position and then explode into a straight jump.

3. The Snatch:

It involves pulling a weighted bar lying on the floor directly over the head with arms straight.

4. Thruster:

To do this exercise, you stand straight upright with a bar of considerable weight held in front of your shoulders. Thereafter you squat down till a point where your thighs become parallel to the floor and subsequently stand up again pressing the bar over the head.

There are several other exercises that involve some or the other variation of pull ups, sit ups and push ups. CrossFit conditioning program often makes use of a number of fitness training equipment such as kettle bells, climbing ropes, skipping ropes, rowing machines and medicine balls.

CrossFit is not workout that targets a specific sport; instead it promotes general and inclusive physical fitness. It has been so designed that any committed individual can benefit from it irrespective of age, gender or experience.
